New Strategic Alliance in Spain and Portugal

ProBiotix Health plc (AQSE: PBX), the life sciences business developing probiotics to support cardiometabolic health, is pleased to announce a new strategic alliance with Spain based Bioksan.

Under the terms of the new exclusive partnership for Spain and Portugal, worth approximately €200,000 a year in ProBiotix sales, ProBiotix has agreed to supply its patented LP_LDL® probiotic strain to Bioksan. As part of a product reformulation, Bioksan will use LP_LDL® as an anchor ingredient to replace red yeast rice which was previously being used within Lipok® a leading cardiovascular health product, positioned within the pharmacy and nutraceutical market in Spain and Portugal.

Hitherto Monacolin K, a naturally occurring compound found in red yeast rice, has been used in cardiometabolic supplements to lower cholesterol. Current investigations by the European Food Standards Authority, will potentially lead to Monacolin K being prohibited in the EU in the foreseeable future, due to concerns regarding its pharmacological activity, long-term safety profile and similarities to prescription statin drugs rather than conventional food supplements.

If a ban takes place, more than 40 supplement brands in Europe currently using Monacolin K will require reformulation. These products represent an estimated consumer market value of €130 million per annum, creating a significant market opportunity for ProBiotix.

A total replacement of all existing monacolin K supplements with YourBiotix turnkey solutions containing LP_LDL® is estimated to offer a long-term potential business opportunity of up €26 million a year.  

Bioksan is one of the first adopters to reformulate an existing product using LP_LDL® as a replacement for Monacolin K. Several additional projects are currently underway in other EU countries.
